COMMON HAZEL
A tree which is known for its long shoots which come out of the ground and can reach up to six metres tall. Its alternate leaves,,,,, with tiny hairs on the surface that make them rough to touch, are heart-shaped at the base and pointed at the end, with double-serrate margins. It bears the fruit hazelnut.
FUN FACT: There's an old Spanish saying to help us remember when the perfect time to collect hazelnuts is: "Por Santa Magdalena, la avellana está llena" ("Around St Mary Magdalene's Day is when hazelnuts are ready"), which is celebrated on 22 July. Its fruit offer excellent benefits for the heart, providing energy in case of overexertion, and it also boosts gastrointestinal transit.
